British ice hockey has a rich and often overlooked history, one that deserves recognition, respect, and renewal. At Gardeot, our mission has always been to elevate the game in the UK, not just by honouring where it’s come from, but by supporting and spotlighting where it’s going next.
That belief is at the heart of 1936.
Why 1936 Matters in British Ice Hockey
The year 1936 stands as one of the most important moments in British ice hockey history, marking Great Britain’s gold medal victory at the Winter Olympics. It represents ambition, belief, and proof that British ice hockey belongs on the world stage.
Our 1936 piece is designed to honour those achievements - but not to live in the past.
Instead, it acts as a bridge between generations. A reminder that the sport’s future depends on today’s players, today’s pathways, and today’s belief that British ice hockey can continue to grow.
Looking Forward: The Next Generation of UK Ice Hockey
While history gives the sport its foundation, progress comes from the players pushing it forward now. Across the NIHL and beyond, a new generation of British talent is emerging - committed, skilled, and driven to take the game further than before.
One of those players is Billy Thorpe.
Billy Thorpe: Representing the Future of Ice Hockey in the UK
Currently playing for the Peterborough Phantoms in the NIHL, Billy Thorpe represents the future of British ice hockey both on and off the ice. Having already represented Great Britain at U18 and U20 level, his journey reflects the modern pathway of UK ice hockey development.
Billy describes pulling on the national shirt as a moment that never loses its impact:
“I currently play for the Peterborough Phantoms in the NIHL. I have represented GB at both U18 and U20 level and every time you pull on the shirt it’s a surreal feeling — one that I hope to experience again in the future with the men’s national team.”
It’s that mindset - pride, patience, and ambition - that defines the next era of the sport.
Ice Hockey Culture Beyond the Rink
At Gardeot, we believe ice hockey culture shouldn’t stop when the game ends. That’s why our pieces are designed to translate the sport into everyday life — subtle, premium, and wearable beyond the rink.
1936 isn’t just a reference to history. It’s a statement of belief:
-
belief in British ice hockey
-
belief in its players
-
belief in its future
By showcasing players like Billy Thorpe, we aim to shine a light on the individuals carrying the game forward, while continuing to build a culture around ice hockey in the UK that feels modern, relevant, and respected.
The Future Is Being Built Now
British ice hockey doesn’t need to be reinvented - it needs to be elevated. Through recognition of its past, support of its present, and confidence in its future, the game can continue to grow both on and off the ice.
1936 is our way of contributing to that journey.
